My girl friend wants to see these two places and I would like to accompany her if we can go by ourselves(in fact, I prefer backpacking than joining tour). Any suggestion in accomondation and transport ?

Your girl friend made a very nice choice. Guiliin is the most beautiful place in China and Yanshuo is even better... And, it is easy to getting around there. Both Guilin and Yanshuo are small and relatively flat town with highly concentrated beautiful places. I suggest you go by yourselves, stay in Guilin for 3 - 5 days. No need backpacking in Guilin, it is a town. The similar in Yanshuo. I had been to Guilin and Yanghuo long time ago, stayed there for 3 weeks. In my opinion The best of the best is the boat trip from Guilin to Yanshuo on Li Jiang River. If you do not take that trip you will miss more than half of the Guilin/Yanghuo trip. So if the boat trip still available, DO NOT TAKE the Taxi!
