Needing travel hints on Kunming |

I am wondering about reasonable, mid to lower priced hotels near the main attractions. I have also heard that it is interesting to stay overnight at an inn located in the stone forrest.
Also, how would it be to travel there by train from Hong Kong? Is it worth the extra time and going without a shower  ?
Is there any great places/cities (other than the stone forrest) that are safe for tourists and within a day of travel outside of Kunming? How about tours, buses, nightlife, and guides?
If anyone has any must do or any advice I would be so grateful. The city sounds so beautiful and exciting! |

Its about a 36 hour train ride from Guangzhou to Kunming, so make sure to get either a hard or soft sleeper because even 24 hours in a hard seat is quite unbearable. Any decent travel guidebook will have enough cheap accomodations listed to get you a cheap room as long as its not in peak season. I had a room in downtown Kunming and just walked and took cabs around the city (they are cheap). Make sure to check out the market there to pick up souvenirs, tea, etc. |
