Jennies,
Below is some information regarding HK and Beijing, hope it helps.
Beijing is a historical city and you must love it if you are interested in history and culture. Great Wall and Palace are two of the five famous things you should visit and probably you can spend 5 or more than 5 days there
Hong is a modern and commercial city, there are lots of tall buildings. However, you can still see some traditional old things, like temples, old and cheap stuffs, fortune tellers, etc. Generally visitors will stay in HK for 3-4 days only.

It depends on what you want to see.
Both cities are large metropolis'. They are both full of history, natural wonders and city life. Both are good gateways to China, ie they both have a foreign oriented tourist industry where a foreigner can easily find his/her way around (Hong Kong more so...). They good cities to get your feet wet if you've never been to China before. Other then that, I guess we'd need more info from you.
When do you plan to be there? Do you like organized tours? Do-it-yourself tours? What are you interested in? Do you like tourist traps (some people do..)? etc...
