|
|
Hey, travelling around asia now and I'm thiking about heading into tibet around the end of Feb, maybe start or March. I know it's cold. Here's the question: Is it freeze your ass off, bone chillingly horrible cold?
Can I still travel around and take in all the sites, everest, monasteries, lakes, and such, or is it too cold no matter how many coats i've got on?
just hoping for some advice, any will be great.
Thanks

Tibet is a very large area with different areas having a different climate.
If you take the route that 95% of travelers to Tibet take (Lhasa, Yam Drok, Gyantse, Shigatse, Everest) then you won't experience very cold weather.
Today Lhasa had a high of 12C and had a low this morning of -5C...not very cold.
In late Feb/early March you can expect Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse to be around 12 to 15C during the day and -2 to -5C at night.
The southern region of Tibet is very far south and is much warmer than most parts of China during the winter. The Amdo region of Tibet (NE Qinghai, northern Sichuan) is very, very cold, but where you are probably going will be okay. Going out to Kailash or to Namtso (or anywhere on the Changtang) will be quite cold and cold weather gear will be needed.
The average high in Lhasa for January 2006 was 11C while the average low was -4C. |
