Tibetan muslims, or muslims in Tibet |

I was in Tibet last Oct-Nov and noticed small communities of muslims in Lhasa and also Shigatse and possibly elsewhere along the Friendship Highway.
I'm wondering, are they most likely part of the Han Chinese migration into Tibet in the late 20th C or were there Tibetan muslims with much older origins in Tibet? |

Most of the muslims in Tibet are originally uighurs from Xinjiang. They have often been living there for several generations and before the chinese occupation. |

In Lhasa all those Muslims who sell dry fruit are Uyghur from Xinjiang. There are also many Hui (a Muslim minority group in China) people from Gansu and eastern Qinghai. The LP guide says there are around 2000 Mulsims living in Lhasa, but that number is probably closer to 6000. Most of the Hui people run noodles shops (more than half of the Hui noodle shops in Lhasa are called Lanzhou Niu Rou Mian or Lanzhou Beef Noodles in English). |
