Yeah, and in most cases even then the price is still open for negotiation. Depending on where you live it might actually be much cheaper to wait until you are in China before you book the flight. I am German and I couldn't believe how much cheaper domestic flights are when booked in China...
If you have online access booking an e-ticket through one of the big Chinese online travel agencies (like e-long.net) might be a good idea. They usually have good prices and you can pick up the ticktets at the e-ticket counter of the airport you will be travelling from. Just be careful: Shanghai has two large airports both of which operate international and domestic flights. Since Shanghai is sooooo big travelling from one to the other will take an hour... if there is no traffic jam, that is
Prices vary depending on the time of the day the flight is going, how much discount an agency can and wants to give on the tickets (remember, everything is negotiable here) and sometimes certain prices are restricted to student travellers or groups with more than xx people or...
