We will be visiting Shanghai in May and were seeking advice on any reasonably priced hotels that were clean, safe and in good location to public transport

Nanjing road (pretty central, lots of eating places and departmental stores, near to metro stationsn - People's Park stations, Henan Road station), I would recommend the Nanjing Hotel (probably around the price range of 300+RMB) or Nan He Hotel (1-star budget, price range below 300RMB). One note of caution, some of these budget hotels require a deposit of 100-200RMB...the deposit will be returned to you upon check out..YMCA, City Hotel, Charms Hotel are a few good ones..
