I have a friend visiting from Canada in January and Iam looking for some inexpensive 3 - 5 day tours out of Shanghai or Beijing. Is it reasonable to book airfare to Beijing from Shanghai without making an advance reservation? It will be the low season - how much are the fares? I can't find anything uinder 250 US. I know cheaper fares are out there - but how does one get them?

why not trying the train with category Z from Shanghai to Beijing. It is USD$60 for the first class(soft sleeper). And it is all first class carriage in this kind of train start with Z.Like Z14 and Z8.They left Shanghai at about 19:00-19:30 every seven minutes and the next morning 7:00-7:30 arrive in Beijing. One simple meal included.
About the airlines,China Southern Airlines has one political that if you buy the ticket 45 days before you travel you can get one 65% discount price. Before 30 days you can get 50% discount.
In Shanghai-Beijing route Air China has one plane operate Beijing-Shanghai-Malbourne-Sydeny has the cheapest price. And Chine Eastern has its own airbus which has the reasonable price.Around USD$110-130 pp.You can buy the ticket a little earlier than you travel.
inexpensive 3-5 day tours is a bit hard for me to answer.Could you have some ideas first that which kind of places you want to visit first?Give us one list then we will have some ideas.
