ideas of "tour group" and travel permit into Lhas |

Flying into Beijing in Ocotber on a multi entry visa and making our way through China.
I have heard of hotels in Chengdu which can organise "tour groups" and travel permit into lhasa which upon arrival said "tour group" disbands. I like the idea of this!
Does anyone know anything about it or which hotels can arrange the "tour" or is it just a scam?

It's not a scam--however prices may vary(but roughly the same--best bet is traffic hotel--or you can try Sam's guest house--but they're many agents at traffic hotel that will book the tour--can't remember price maybe 1200 to 1600 rmb range---what you can get is normally a 3 day tour(that's my suggestion)---they'll give you hotel for those nights(your share with others for those nights)--take you to a couple of sights if you want to go--then the group disbands -or some go home-- some continue if they booked longer--its up to you--I've been to Tibet several times and many different ways-and I live in China(Chengdu now)--so if you want more information etc--send me a note --cheers--and really the first couple of days are good to get acclimatised to the altitude there and get your bearings--anyway--happy hiking-cheers --sebastian--
p.s it is cheaper to buy your return ticket back to Chengdu in Lhassa-than buying a two way flight ticket----but do it in the morning at the flight centre--afternoon -late morning is a mad house.

I was there last year and Sim's Cozy Guesthouse organnized me the ticket and the "permit" for 1900 yuan without any tours or guesthouse in Lhasa. Their web site is www.gogosc.com and they are very nice. |

1900 is a history, all the hostels have rise the price, from the websites of all the hostels of Chengdu, Mix & Backpackers' Guesthouse ( you can check the price at their website www.donkey-pal.com) offers the cheapest one now, only 1940 RMB, and Sim's cozy guesthouse 1950 RMB, and not sure about rest of hostels in Chengdu. But It seems none of these hostels could be able to arrange permit at moment due to the 40th anniversay of celebration Tibet. And nobody knows how the price goes after this celebration... We'll see it anyway...
