during the tour I faced some question :
If I show up in Datong on a Tuesday and want to leave on a sleeper train on Wednesday night for Pingyao, will I be able to get a seat? If not, can I go somewhere nearby and do it? I also need to go to Kaifeng from Pingyao on a sleeper on a Friday, buying the ticket 1-2 days before. Am I kidding myself? |

You should be okay as long as it is not first week in October, May or week before/after CNY. Generally there are heaps of free seats 24 hours before departure. Chinese leave gettting tickets till the last minute. |

Pingyao's not that far from Datong, though. You can probably just take a bus or get hard seat train during the day. You might also need to return to Taiyuan from Pingyao to get trasnfer to Kaifeng--Pingyao's not a great transit point, though it is probably getting better.
have a good tour |

oh yea, that train ticket you should be ok, just get it right when you get there. I do most of my travel in China by train, and whenever I arrive at a destination, I immediately go to the ticket office at the station and get my next onward travel ticket. Even if it's not available, at least I know there was nothing I could do about it.
And yea, that ticket to Pingyao is an easy trip, don't worry about hard seat (if only hard seat is available take a bus) |
