On my return from 2 months touring around SE Asia I have a 8 hour layover in Shanghai before connecting with my flight back to Vancouver. The LP China states you can enter without a visa as long as your connecting flight out of the country is within 24 hours.Do I have enough time to jump in a cab to the Bund for about 4 hours of sight-seeing figuring 1 hour each way to the city centre and a 2 hour check in or is this a crazy idea I arrive in the morning......................S.B. |

What you are proposing is plausible.... The Chinese have unusual rules when it comes to connecting flight. I know with internal flights lugguage can not be checked on until the check in counter for the flight opens. This can be a pain as it takes more time to find a place to store luggage when out of the airport.
Taxi fare from Putong to Nanjing Lu is about 120-130RMB. Don't take any of the offers for lifts into Shanghai from the hawkers just after leaving security or else you will be swindled into paying a lot more than that (200+RMB).
Maglev either way: 8 + 8 = 16 mins
Metro from Longyang metro station to People's Square metro station: max 30 + 30 = 60 mins (?),So... you've got travel time down to about 1.25 hours... that should be good!
