Hi there
Just wondering if anyone has got their Chinese visa in Mongolia. I'm in Dublin at the moment and because my trip is quiet open and I'm not sure what date I'll be arriving and I've no back-up documents for visa application. It's proving to be a bit difficult. So I don't know if I should weather the storm here with embassy or just leave it until I get to Mongolia.

Cheers

I have just applied (today) to the Chinese Embassy in Dublin for a single entry 30 day Tourist Visa. My understanding is you will get 90 days from date of issue to activate the visa (eg enter China), then 30 days in China, extendable once(probably) for 30 days.
The girl in front of me got turned away as she had no airline ticket, whereas I just told him I was getting a train into China and a train out, and therefore I didn't have tickets.
Far as I know, You don't need visa support / invite for a tourist visa. For the single entry, 30 day tourist visa, they charge €66 for next day visa, or €33 for one week (non-Irish passport prices), at a guess it was €16 and €50 for Irish passports.
Guess I will know in a weeks time.
PS also I had typed a rough itenerary showing entering from Mongolia and exiting to Vietnam, worked to suit my 30 day timeframe (mostly not true, or course, as I will try to extend the visa), which the gut scrutinised, but then gave back to me).
Good luck

If it's a long or flexible trip (as it sounds), then the cheapest/most hassle free way is to just fly to HK then enter overland - there you can also get long term visa (1 year multi-entry biz) for under 100 euro. It sounds like you're coming from Europe and doing China first, so this makes sense - you could start in the southeast, head to the southwest, go north a bit, and come back eastward.
Note that you can get ferries to Korea from Dalian(maybe?), Yantai (maybe?), Weihai (definitely) and Qingdao (definitely). I've heard something about ferries to/from Shanghai but I'm not sure. So .. for Korea just say you're getting a boat from Qingdao, China. Japan - dunno. Buy the ticket in Korea.
