How much is £10 in yuan?
Should you barter in markets? If so, how much should you 'get them down to' if they say an item is £20 sterling? How much could you expect to pay minimum?
Should women wear long dresses, always be covered up so as not to offend in specific places e.g. Temples? What is the best clothing to take when visiting China in August?
And the best baggage e.g. large suitcase or huge backpack on the plane to China in August? Will it be chilly? Do I need a coat?
The best transport from Du Pong airport to Shanghai e.g. train, or bus?
I have been told there are beggars on the streets. I do not wish to offend but do not want to be fazed by them. What do I say in Mandarin to tell them I am not interested? |

Hi Carol,
Okay, well, I'm not an expert by any means, but you seem desperate so I'll at least answer one of your queries.
From my experience, you should definitely barter in markets. They expect it, and will sometimes start going down automatically, although they start very high. Go down really low first of all--they will try and tell you 'no way'. However, they always want to make a sale, so if you say "Well, I'll think about it" and start walking off, they will often chase after you and go down drastically. Try it, and see if it works for you! Good luck! |
