I plan on photographing the Guilin/Longshen areas in May with a very large format camera. Does anyone know the best way to get around? Bicycling is out of the question with the weight/bulk involved. Do they have Mopeds? Thanks alot for any advice.

My suggestion is that you hire a pedicab in the city. The local driver is familiar with the routes and can easily take you to the places you want to. You just look after your camera and take photos. That can be an interesting way to trace thecity and much more budget than automobiles.

I was in Longshen with 2 photographers who live in Guilin this past fall. We traveled in a van..the ride is 3 hours from Guilin through mountainous terrain and the last part is a dizzying ride up a steep mountain to reach the base and entrance into the terraced minority community. From that point you park your car and climb 8 kilometers to the very top....it is spectacular and worth the trip. I would suggest that you inquire at a good hotel in Guilin if there is a guide for hire to take you there....take your own food and water because there are no snacks available except for a popsicle stand at the lookout point. Wear secure footwear because the paths are narrow and the terraces steep. I"ve visited a fair amount of interesting places in the world and this is in my top 5. Have a good trip.

I'm going to Longshen at the end of this month and just for photography only. I have no experience with Guilin. My question is: Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo? Which one is the nearest and convinient to get there?
