I have to join Tianin university as Postdoctoral Fellow. I would like to know that how much RMB will be sufficient to sustain a two person familiy if accomodation is free of cost. I an a vegetarianI am going to get 1600RMB per month. Is it sufficient???

well, I think that is enough. But you have to find good and cheap place to shop. I think since you are stay in University, every University has canteen, where cooked Chinese food will cost less then 20 yuan per person per day. The veg will be even cheaper than meat.
You can also cook for youself. Better ask local people. Veg market in China is everywhere, full of fresh and cheap things.
