Boarding the Trans Siberian in Datong |

I'm intending to travel from China to Western Russia on the Trans Siberian.
I was wondering if it is possible to board the train at Datong, rather than in Beijing (I've been to Beijing before and it will add a long distance to my travel plans if I have to go back there). I'm not planning to do the journey in one go - the first leg would be as far as Ulaan Baatar.
Hope you can help me out with this - I'd appreciate any reply
