My wife and I are planning a visit to China in the New Year, but we have been put off by stories of - how can I put this without causing offence - Chinese people hawking (spitting)in public places. Can anyone confirm or deny this practice. Thanks in advance. Lester |

The government tried to curb public spitting in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai after SARS crisis last year. Hence it's improving. However, do expect to see poeple spitting in public more often in minor/inland cities such as Xian. |
