Currently, i am in Shanghai traveling on a 90-day one-entry visa (I used the one entry upon entering the country --- I know I have no entries left).
At present, I will need to extend my visa for about 17 days (my flight to NYC from BJ leaves 17 days after my visa expires). I would also love the chance to add a visit to HK during this trip.
So my qs are as follows:

1. is it possible to add 1-entry as part of an visa extension so as to visit HK (I imagine many people would like to do this, and are confused by the visa reqs for HK)? If so, how much does it cost?

2. last june i extended a visa in Xian for 160 RMB. Today I called the Shanghai PSB and they told me that visa extensions are 160 RMB. But lately on TT I keep seeing posts that list Visa extensions as 760 RMB ---- this obviously has me confused

you need to include your nationality when asking about visas. Always.
Visa extensions should cost you around 750 yuan only if you are traveling on an American passport. Otherwise it should be 160 yuan.

There is a place on the visa extension application for more entries. I always put 0 since I never needed entries on my extensions, but I would assume you can get another entry with your extension since there is a place for it on the application.

Also, you can get a new visa in Hong Kong quite easily. This will also cost you the equivalent of $100 US.

You can have your tourist (Category: L) visa extended for another month with 1 entry (It can be 0 entry, too).

If you are US citizen, the fee for even 1-month extention is 760RMB which was carried out from the beginning of August, 2007. Before it was as cheap as 160RMB as you mentioned...

The visa fee for US citizens arises again. Now it's 940rmb, for even one month extension.
