Shenzhen is huge and surprisingly varied, and as it is probably one of the most modern and quickly developing cities in the world it is definitely worth seeing.
If I were you, I'd head out of the station up to Shennan Da Dao and catch the double-decker sightseeing bus (#2) on the other side of the road. Shennan is a ten minute walk north from the station, but I wouldn't ask anybody for directions until you've walked north for at least five minutes. There are some very unreliable people around that train station. Just carry straight on when you walk out and you'll be okay.
So, take the bus and check out the architecture, wide boulevards and modern urban planning.
Get off the bus at Windows of the World (you'll know it by the Eiffel Tower) and catch the subway back. Get off the subway at random, have a look around the neighbourhood and get back on. Total expense so far perhaps 12 RMB.
To get to the airport you'll (obviously) need the airport bus, which leaves from where you started outside the train station in Luo Hu, which by an amazing coincidence is where the subway terminates.
It's a place worth seeing, believe me. Most people seem to hate it, but for better or worse it's the future. |
