I am flying in to HK on the 15th and out from Shenzhen (to Kunming) on the 16th. I arrive at 10:30 pm and leave Shenzhen at 2:00 pm the next day. I assume that with deplaning, waiting for my luggage, and going through customs and immigration, I will actually be able to leave the airport at around 11:30 pm. I am wondering which is the most reasonable option:

a) go to Shenzhen that night and stay somewhere cheap near the Shenzhen airport (Can I get to shenzhen that late at night? ferries, buses, trains running?)

b) stay somewhere cheap in HK that night and get to Shenzhen airport the next morning. (suggestions on where to stay that is convenient and cheap, and will let me check in in the middle of the night?)

c) sleep in the HK airport and take the direct ferry from HK airport to Shenzhen airport the next morning.
Since I am both cheap and averse to complicated planning, I am leaning towards C.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

It would be difficult to go to shenzhen and find a decent place to stay the night you arrive, so i would recommend you to stay somewhere in hong kong. you can either rough it up the airport for the night, or head into hong kong to find a place to stay. at the airport, its clean and like you said you can catch the ferry in the morning.

where as if you come into hong kong, you will have the trouble of having to find a decent place to stay for cheap as well as taking the bus or train to Lo Wu (the border) then make your way to the airport. HK airport is very clean, and it's quiet around that time of night. 'borrow' a blanket from the plane and you should be fine as it can get quite cold with the aircon system!
