hi guys;

would like to visit China in Aug or Sept. 08. This would be my first time in China. I would like to fly into Hong Kong, then travel by train toShangghai, Beijing, and then to Hanoi. I would like to know the following:

1) how many days should I plan for this, assuming I wanted to stop along the way some major tourist things?

2) What would be an estimate of the cost of budget or moderate trip like this?

3) Because of the Olypmics, maybe Aug would make it more difficult, or expensive, at least near Beijing? and

4) If I ride the train to Beijing to Hanoi, can I get on and off along the way?

It is possible to do as you have outlined, but traveling by train from Beijing to VN your stops need to be preplanned as you can't get off and then a day or two later get back on with the same ticket. Once off you would need to purchase a new ticket.

So plan your stops so that your first segment might be BeiJing to Hangzhou, then next day over to Suzhou and/or Shanghai. From there down to another stop. So look at a guide book and see what lies between the two places.

Unless you have a special reason for your outline, I might suggest flying to BeiJing and then the train south. Or take a bus from HK over to Xiamen, then a train to WuYi Shan or Hangzhou.
