recommend Hostels on the trip to China |

Hi, I'm leaving for a trekking trip in China in about 2 1/2 weeks. I am planning on staying in hostels in Beijing and Xian (any suggestions on which ones are best would be great!). What is the best way to book these, or are all hostels first come first serve? Lonely planet seems to list only phone numbers and some have a fax number, but I just wanted to see if anyone knew how they work there. I don't want to be stuck without lodging if I am supposed to reserve in advance.

In Xi'an, you can try the Shuyuan Hostel which has been recommended by some others on the board, but I've not had a chance to stay there yet. I stayed at the Fukang Hotel when I went! 
In Beijing, try the Peking Downtown Backpackers Accomodation, I stayed there for 5 days in January and it was absolutely wonderful!
