Beijing map |

I'm going to be studying Chinese at Beijing University for the summer. I'm looking for a good map of Beijing, one with characters for sure, pinyin would be nice, too, English doesn't matter so much. Any suggestions? I hear LP had one til last year but sent them to the knackers. |

Several Beijing maps (Langenscheidt, Periplus, others) are available in bookstores in the US (and probably where you live). They will cost vastly more than what you will pay in China and will not show outlying neighborhoods such as BeiDa, but will have information in English (tourist sites, hotels, etc) and will be printed on paper that does not immediately fall apart. Getting one is worth it if you want to look at something now.
In Beijing, there is (or was in 2003) the "Beijing Tourist Map" sold at shops in the airport and high-class hotels (I wouldn't expect to find one at BeiDa). This map has English and characters, and includes BeiDa and some bus routes (and #5's "qiao"). Look inside before buying to make sure it's the one with English.
The 2 maps sold everywhere in Beijing, "Beijing Jiaotong Youlantu" and "Tourist Traffic Map of Beijing" are cheap and comprehensive but, despite the words on their covers, have only characters, no pinyin or English (and very tiny characters at that) |
