I am flying into Beijing & flying out of Shanghai and reading the forums and it appears that I should spend atleast 5 days in Beijing. Unfortunately 2 of the days are saturday & sunday - does it matter? Remember our days are shorter as we have a toddler(4yrs)!
It appears that there is not a lot to do in Shanghai, are 3 days sufficient and stay a day longer in Beijing? How safe is overnight train to Shanghai with toddler? Thanks

In China,especially the big cities,it makes no difference whether it is weekday or weekend,every day is just another day.Stores ..tourist attractions etc are open just as long as during the week,they can be a little busier though.
Traffic is generally a little bit lesss at weekend.

Cant comment on how safe the trains are but i have been travelling to China on and off for 6 years and i can say that it is generally very safe.I dont think you should have worries about that as long as you take normal precautions,dont flash your cash or goodies around.I dont think any special measures are needed if only visiting big cities.
