We are looking for places to stay or to avoid in Lijiang and Dali within the next few days. Has anyone been there recently? Failing anything specific, how busy was it? Will we be OK just to turn up?

I think you're fine to just turn up. I was in both places last week, and we did just that. There were plenty of vacancies.

In Lijiang, I stayed in a cute place -- not really a hostel, but a small travel agency that had a few rooms. They were really clean and nice (a double was 50Y). It's called "Tourist Club." I know several people who stayed at the Dongba Guesthouse, and they liked it OK. They have a nice adjacent cafe with internet.

In Dali, we stayed at the No. 4 Guesthouse and opted for 15Y beds in a 4-bed dorm room. It was reasonably clean, though the bathrooms weren't the greatest. They have free internet and laundry. The staff's really nice. We also did their one-day tour of the lake, and it was great. I highly recommend it.
