Anybody ever gone from Beijing to Bangkok over land?
What route and methods did you use and what type of visa difficulties, if any, did you have? |

Got Lao visa in Beijing.
Flew Beijing - Kunming for $90 on China Air.
Kunming - Mengla on the bus (you could also go via Jinghong).
It was an overnight fraught with landslides and discomfort.
Mengla-Mohan in a little shared truck thing (is it called Mohan?)
Overnight in Mohan at their one hotel
Easy cross into Laos at Boten, immediate tuk-tuk to Luang Namtha. You could also go to Huay Xai from here and cross to Thailand in the north. The tuk-tuk will accept Chinese currency and you can change to kip at Boten, or to Baht at Huay Xai, or to kip in Luang Namtha.
South to Luang Prabang
South to Vientiane. There is an overnight bus to Bangkok from here. Very clean and professional. With food stops.
You can also cross at Savannakhet, further south.
I went to Pakse and crossed at Pakse and caught the train to Bangkok from Udon Ratchathani. Very easy to do. No visa issues at the Thai border. |
