A GUANGZHOU zoo will make history next week as it hosts the mainlands first koalas, Information Times reported. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in Queensland, Australia will be presenting six koalas to the Xiangjiang Wildlife Zoo in Guangzhou.

Arriving by air on April 27, the koalas will be on display in June.

At present, experts from the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in Queensland have quarantined 10 koalas (five male and five female), among which they
will select six to send to Guangzhou, accompanied by a vet and two trainers.

Meanwhile, Xiangjiang Wildlife Zoo is preparing for the arrival of the “teddy bears”. They began planting over 40,000 eucalyptus plants for the koalas three years ago. Among the 300 breeds of eucalyptus in the world, only 12 are edible to koalas.

At present, there are less than 50 koalas living outside of Australia, the newspaper said.
