Bring an UNLOCKED GSM/CDMA phone (doesn't need to be tri-band) and buy a local SIM card here in China. This's cheaper than auto-roaming on your US SIM card. |

China uses the GSM system, and most American cell phones do not. The different systems certainly do not work together.
In simple terms, if you have a GSM phone it *should* work in China if it an unlocked phone. A tri-band GSM phone will definitely will work if it is unlocked. Check with your cellphone provider if you do not know what type your network uses.
Whether you will have to get a SIM card will depend on whether your home provider has a roaming agreement with China (Most do). if not, or if you want cheaper phone calls, simply buy a local SIM card in China for about $10 and local top-up cards. Both are available on every street corner . |
