First timer to Asia - China!

I'll be in Shanghai April 27th to May 6th, looking for a hotel in a good location (for a traveler), and for a good price. Please help, I have no idea!

When I booked this flight, I did not know beginning of May was a Chinese holiday, should I expect big crowds everywhere? Kind of concerned, I don't want to spend my vacation stuck in traffic half the time! Do that where I live driving to work everyday!

Any Information you can give is greatly appreciate.
