I'm in Japan.
I have two weeks holiday over golden week (last week April and first week May) and my plans to go to Sydney are falling through.
So, I want to go somewhere:
less than a 12 hour flight
not more than a 3 or 4 hour time difference
somewhere cheap (as Golden Week flights won't be, accommodation and food possibilities should be)
somewhere not too hot
somewhere not too cold
somewhere worth spending 10 days in
somewhere easy to get around without having to hire a car, moped, etc
somewhere that's not a beach holiday
i like cities, jungles, ruins, lakes, beautiful views, museums, art galleries, people watching, exploring, trying new foods.
i'm not bothered about a night life beyond restaurants.
in a nutshell, i want a relaxing holiday but with lots of stimulation.
i'm 33 and probably doing the trip with someone though it may be alone, in which case somewhere i won't have to pay huge single supplements.I travel in budget way.
what would you suggest?

You could also fly into beijing and out of Shanghai, see the great wall, and travel on an over night train to Nanjing (or Xuzhou but the amazing jade armour suit in the museum there is on tour in Japan at the moment) and go to Suzhou, another water village and Hangzhou.
