Touring Tibet - on our own |

A friend and I are eyeing up three weeks in Tibet in April. Doing research we read a lot about visas and permits for travelling. With such short time we are considering avoiding 'hiccups' by going with an organized tour. 15 days usually, they all seem to cover the basics, Lhasa, everest base camp, trip to Kathmandu, etc. Trouble is - they seem to run well over $3000 CAD (2650ish USD).
Will the convenience be worth the extra expense?
Would covering the area ourselves actually cost us close to that much? (basic accom etc)
Are all these "inconveniences" imagined? (border crossings, permits etc)
Help you experienced traveller you!!
Any advice is appreciated. |

That largely depends on if you can settle for budget accommodation and if you'd like to take the challenge of going through language barriers.
Budget accommodation is around RMB25(dorm)-180(single room) per day.
You may need to hire a jeep (with a driver) to visit some must-sees, you can find fellow travellers to share the fares.
To visit the major tourist resorts in Lhasa, you can walk or take a bus.
Anyway, 2650 USD is too much for a budget traveller. |
