first trip to Shanghai - what to expect? |
|
|
My brother Sean is intending take a 3 week trip to Shanghai this March with a Chinese family he knows here in Ireland. Naturally as his big sister, I am concerned for his wellbeing while there. Would anyone familiar with Shanghai be able to answer these questions for me :
How safe is it for Westerners, particularly red-haired pale young men ?!
How much would he need to survive on per day, given his accomodation is probably taken care of ?
What would be the highlights of Shanghai for him to visit while there ? is it a long journey to get into the surrounding countryside ?
Any other advice you would give ?
Thank You ! |

Safe . Only careful about pickpockets. Happilly , the first time I was "followed" by several kids trying to steal discreetly from my day-backpack , I was warned by a shopkeeper .Otherwise very safe . No need for shots, I would say, except polio and Tetanos . If accomodation is OK , prices for food , transportation , even Taxi , are very cheap . Typical fare for a taxi ride is 2 Euro . You can eat a meal for between 1 Euro and 3 Euro in these sort of chinese fastfoods . Bus tickets are 10 cents( of Euro ), Subway is 20 or 30 cents .
Must see : the Bund along the Huangpu river early in the morning (7am) and when the sun goes down . Views on Pudong , Tai-chi in the early morning... |
