Most times that I want to travel in China (admittedly during the national vacation,spring festival) I find it almost impossible to get tickets.
When is the latest I can reasonably expect to get tickets to Thailand if I want to travel around the May 1st holiday?

this is ALWAYS a problem. To be honest you're already running a bit late.
Bear in mind that EVERYONE in China seems ot up and relocate for each of the three main breaks (Spring Festival, May 1, and October 1) either to go home, or go abroad, so they mka make preparations in advance.
Secondly, remember that travel here SUCKS since you can't buy tickets in advance for reduced prices - the airlines will wait until nearer to the time before telling you the price (when, of course, it's at a premium).
Finally, you should know that thailand is pretty much the No.1 tourist destination for Chinese. Do you really want to spend your May break with your neighbours?
That said, you can always get tickets if you're flexible, but your options will be limited...
