The dollar seems to be loosing ground to the euro. How is it against the chinese currency? We travel modestly, what can we expect to spend per day? We will travel as a family of three.

I was there with my wife in Oct-Nov -04. 3 star hotels were 15-25 USD per night at -40 to -60 % discount (off season). Dormitory beds about 8 USD. A 2-3 course meal for two in a local restaurant about 4-8 USD including beer (cheapest breakfast was <1 dollar). Taxis are about 2-3 USD, 14 hour train in soft sleeper class 14 USD, domestic flights like 180 USD Chendu-Lhasa, Guilin-Beijing 90 USD.

If you do not fly or do shopping, 50-80 USD/day should be enough for a family of three. Do take enough money for emergencies, unplanned flights etc, though. You can actually take unused money back home...
