Buying a Camera en route |
|
|
Hey,
I will be heading off on a RTW trip in early March and was wondering whether it's a wise move to hold off buying a digital camera in the UK?? I will spending a few days in Hong Kong and then off to Bangkok and Sigapore. I need a camera ASAP but if it makes sense to wait until i hit Asia then thats what I'll do.
Anyone have any tips about buying out there, or whether the savings will justify the wait??
Cheers guys |

Prices in HK are definitely cheaper than UK/Europe but the rip-off factor has to be considered. There are a lot of crooks in the camera business over there. I would avoid ANY place along the tourist strip in Tsim Sha Tsui; the likelihood of pressure sales and shady shit is almost a given. There ARE many reputable dealers, however, and they tend to be located across the harbour on HK island, eg. Photo Scientific won't rip you off, but their prices are a little bit higher than the rest. You're really paying for peace of mind when you shop here.
Man Shing and Wing Shing (they're sister stores) in Mong Kok is the cheapest reputable dealer in the city - this is where the locals go to get their gear. |
