May Day Holiday in China

I had originally planned to start my 5 week trip to China on 2nd of May until I discovered that the 1st & 4th of May are public holidays. The Lonely Planet says that this is now a week long holiday. Can anyone advise me whether things have quietened down by 9th May or should I delay even a further week. is it possible to find cheap hotels?I was hoping to fly in from Australia, starting in Beijing on 9th May.

Actually, some people/students take a few more days off work/school, so you might want to come later! Smile Officially, the whole 1st week of May, from the 1st to the 7th, is a national public holiday.
