Top 5: parks for play

1 Century Park
Shanghai's largest park is located in Pudong next to the Science and Technology museum. It costs RMB 10 to enter, and once inside you can explore the park by tandem bike (RMB 20-40) or take it easy on the man-made lake in a rented boat (RMB 30). It's also great for flying kites, badminton and roller-skating.

Location: No. 1001, Jinxiulu, Pudong
Tel: 021-38760588

2 Daning Lingshi Park
Located in northern Shanghai near the Shanghai Circus World metro stop (Line 1), this little-known park costs RMB 2 to enter and has numerous facilities to amuse the kids. You can hire boats on the man-made lake, jump on the bouncy castle, ride electric cars and scale the climbing wall.

Location: No. 288, Guangzhong Xilu, Zhabei

3 Fuxing Park
Offers fairground rides, a playground and remote-controlled boats. If you're looking for something less strenuous, choose from craft activities, face painting and fishing. Entry is RMB 2.

Location: No. 105, Yandanglu, Luwan

4 Jingan Park
If the children get restless while you're shopping, take a detour to Jingan Park. Located opposite Jingan temple on the corner of Nanjinglu, this small park has a children's play area with swings and slides. You can rest by the pond and point out the fish, the odd bird or butterfly. Best of all, it's free.

Location: No. 1649, Nanjing Xilu, Jiangan
Tel: 021-62483238

5 Zhongshan Park
This pleasing park (RMB 2) has a lake where you can hire electric boats and enjoy various amusement rides; however, it is Fun Dazzle (RMB 25) that makes the visit worthwhile. An indoor play area with slides, mazes, tunnels and ball pits, Fun Dazzle will keep the little ones amused for several hours.
