Chinese Grape Wines?? |
Has anyone ever encountered (grape) wines from Western China (Xinjiang) or any wines mades with grapes native to China? I'll be in Beijing in March and I was hoping to pick some up (might be some customs implications, huh?). I've heard that grapes grow well in China's Northwest. Even if you know of a reputable liquor shop in Beijing that might help.

Chinese wines are no longer a rarity. There are several large wineries in several provinces making a range of products. Some are quite good. Wineries in Shangxi, Shandong and Henan produce the lion's share, but I have heard of Xinjiang wines as well. But your question about wines made with native grapes stumps me......the ones I've seen have been labeled "Cabernet Sauvignon" and "Merlot" etc. etc. These are, of course, made to meet "modern" urban demand. |
