Moving to Shanghai from the USA in January. We do not have a home computer, should we purchase before we leave the USA? Or, purchase in Shanghai? If were to purchase in Shanghai, can it be purchased with English langauge?
Also, what do people use for an internet provider? Is AOL used? |

AOL's a joke outside of the USA. They have proprietary browsers and you do not need it. You can still use their web email to send and receive though from any computer in the world.
In Shanghai you will get an ADSL connection from wherever you live--the management company will hook you up for about 140-180RMB a month for unlimited use. That equates to about US$20.00 a month. You will find that (yes, I am from California) that the State of the Internet outside the USA is MUCH MUCH better than inside the US)
You can easily get a Windows XP operating system for about the same price in the US and you can order from Dell in English at www.dell.com.cn or have a colleague or friend get you a MUCH better deal and Much better computer from Xujiahui (the area in Shanghai where you can get all those things).
Strongly recommend you do NOT bring your computer here. Strongly urge you not to because the voltage is different and it's a pain in the a** to deal with. |
