Upon arrival at the New Century Hotel in Beijing, I will need RMB. I will have a cash/debit card. Any suggestions on where to go near hotel to get RMB and what denominations are suggested? What exchange rate should I expect? Any cautions to exercise?

Sometimes the best bet is just to exchange money at the hotel you are staying at. They need your passport and all that. Usually the rate hovers around the 8.11 standard plus or minus a few. It's a pain here that unless you have a local (China) debit/credit card, it is hard to get around and buy stuff using your own (non-China) debit/credit cards. Especially when you are out at the antique market, they take cash. Plus you don't want to be giving them your credit card number anyway. Cash here is like USA, the biggest bill you can get is the 100RMB bill...which is like 11 USD...hehe..so you'll be carry around a lot of these..sometimes you have like 1000 or 1500 RMB inyour pocket. You don't need to carry wallet as no one ever checks your ID. So no point in bringing your driver license, your credit cards, ATM cards, all that with you. Just bring cash. Keep the large amount of big bills in a different pocket than the one where you have the changes and the few 100 RMB for regular use. It's pretty safe here.

You may be interested in this: when you leave migration upon arriving at the Beijing airport, you will run right into "cash exchange machines". Just put in some USD notes, press the button and collect your RMP. The whole operation just takes a couple of seconds. No questions asked, no passport needed, no commission nor transfer costs to be paid. These machines accept notes in USD, EUR, GBP , etc. Same rate as anywhere else. Very convenient.
