I will be travelling to mainland China, Hong Kong and Tibet in August. I will be visiting the following cities (in this order): Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Lhasa, Guilin and Hong Kong. I will be flying on all domestic flight segments within China (no bus or train travel).

2 questions regarding vaccinations:

1. Do I need to take malaria tablets to visit any of these places?

2. Do I need any vaccinations if I am willing to abide by certain basic rules such as not drinking tap water, etc.?

China is a safe place in term of Malaria, I don't think you need to take any pill or do vaccination for the trip you stated. The chance to get injury or kill by traffic is far greater.
