I am looking for a strategically placed hotels in Beijing & Shanghai with easy walking access to major attractions and/or local train/subway. First time visit to both cities.

For Beijing: JingLun Hotel Nikko: right by the World Trade Center by China World Hotel, silk street market and walking distance or short cab ride to Tianamen Square, Mao Tse Tung's mausoleum and the Forbidden City and People's Congress.
Impeccable service at this hotel as well. Very centrally located.
Shanghai: I stayed in the Pudong Holiday Inn which was right by the subway station however, service was mediocre and rooms were HOT with poor airflow
I also stayed at the Panorama Court in Shanghai: great location by the Bund and view of the Huangpu river, but a cab ride away to the Yu Yuan gardens etc.
