It can be arranged from both ways if you are looking for a all inclusive group tour. If you are looking for a backpacking trip then it depends on your luck. Many people have traveled on this route even it is officially not open for individual foreign travellers. |

The road is officially off limit for foreigners unless in a 4wd with a driver, guide and a handfull of special permits. Theres buses between Khargilik and Ali. Go to Khargilik and try negotiating a place on the bus (illegally) or try hitchhiking. It can take anything from 2 days to a week doing that stretch including waitingtime for a lift. At times it's not possible at all. There are sleeperbuses between Ali and Lhasa, they take 2-3 days, also not legally unless you negotiate a permit with the PSB in Ali (very possible). |
