I'll be travelling to China (Beijing, Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, and smaller places in Yunnan Province). I'll be there for about a month and I would like to avoid carrying too much cash. Will I be able to use a Visa Debit Card to withdraw cash from ATM machines periodically. Will I be able to cash traveller's checks?

Yeah sure. I have been able to withdraw using a Visa Electron debit card. There is also opprtunities to use machines in hotels as well as banks that work with cards too but can be unpredictable. If in doubt about access and availability i recommend getting enough out to budget the period that you are away from larger cities. Travellers cheques changable only usually in Bank of China branches(not on saturdays for some reason!)and large hotels if you stay there and with passport of course.
