Does anyone know whether you get better exchange rates buying Chinese currency in the UK through a travel agent or should I wait until I arrive in China and get my currency there i.e. change my Sterling for Yuan in China? What kind of rates I can expect in China if I changed my currency at a bank there?

Change some small amount in your home country, if you stay in a big city in China use the ATM, otherwise bring US dollar.
But I think The rates are very well controlled by the government. This means you'll probably get the same rate at your hotel as at an ATM.during the change maybe you meet lots of fake yuans as well in circulation. watch out for them, and if you got one, pass them on to the next shopkeeper ie simply spend them rather than try and bring them to attention - lots of hassle and trouble!
