the best way to travel to Hongkong and China? |
|
|
Three of us are travelling to Hong Kong and China in Jan 2006, we have two months there. We are thinking of making our way up to Kunming and maybe Dali and back again. What would be the best way to travel? Trains all the way there and back? Or fly to Kunming and train it back or vise versa?
Also... Chinese New Year
I realise that a month into our trip it is New Year which I have been told makes getting accomodation near impossible. Any advice/recommendations?
Thanks |

The tour is heavy at the beginning and end of the holiday as most people are trying to get back home to be with the family for the main days and the new year day. I have ridden on the trains during the new year's eve and day and had no problems except the loud fireworks as the train entered or went through various cities during the night. The number of people on the transportation at that time are few as they are all at home with family.
Restaurants and stores may be closed in a lot of places for one or two days, but otherwise the tourist hotels won't be full. Again,

As a tourist I think a combination of bus and train would be ideal. Flying just costs too much!
Yeah you will have a problem with the New Year. Everyone will be travelling like mad during that season. Best to book beforehand, I think you will have more trouble with booking transportation during that period rather than accomodation!
If you can, do go up further to Lijiang, about 3 hours north of Dali, Lijiang is a much prettier place than Dali. It is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Have fun! |
