touring in HK , need advice on clubs and local cuisines |
|
|
Hi !
I'm in HK at the moment and need advice for two different points :
1/ I have ben to some bars already and find that good but I'm looking for clubs with "good electronic" music dj (good locals or internetional ones). Can someone give me one or two for next week ?
I'm more into house and electro than techno . Thanks !
2/What's your best restaurant for about 150 hk$ (drinks non included) ? I have already try a Malaysian one in Long Kwai Fong, a Chinese one in Tsim tsa tsuy and a pizzeria in Shek O...every was good and cheap, just looking for locals advice !
Thank you very much ! |

I used to love club ING - it's much much better in the fall and winter time when all of the brats are in school. But it is a hip hop club.
This is a pretty good online resource. - otherwise just use the BC Magazine and HK Magazine as a guide to what's going on around town. Those can be picked up for free around Central, TST, Admiralty and Wanchai bars, clubs and restaurants.
Best restuarant for $150 I love Cafe Gypsy (or as it's called now Le Gypsy) - 29 Shelley Street, the Mid-Levels. Just take the escalator straight up - past all of the Mid-Levels restuarants (it's above Caine Road).
I also really like Basil Thai in Pacific Place - not exactly authentic Thai, but more of an updated version. A third recommendation would be for Ye Shanghai - also in Pacific Place- yes overpriced, but quite good.
Lastly, I'd probably recommend Lippo Chiu Chow Restaurant in the Lippo Centre in Admiralty - which specializes in the lesser-known Chiu Chow style Cantonese food. |

I don't know about House or Electro, but Dragon-i (in the Centrium on Hollywood road) or Drop (harder to find - check HK Magazine for the address, magazine can be found at most DeliFrance) are usually good bets. Lan Kwai Fong is pretty good for the music - you might try Lux, Club 97 (FYI this is one of the local gay bars for most of the week, don't go if you're uncomfortable with that) or D26.
If you're looking at Wan Chai, it's harder to say, but some of the more lively clubs on the weekends are Carnegie's, the Groovy Mule, Mes Amis, or Venue. All found along Lockart Road (walk along it from the start of Lockart Road, near Admiralty, and you should find a tone of places).
More sedate ones - Kangaroo's (the Australian Pub), located underneath KLONG (still on Lockart Road), Coyote (further up Lockart Road, closes around midnight).
I seriously caution you about going to the Manhattan ClubbING in the Renaissance - yes, it's cheap to buy drinks (HKD$120 for open bar 10pm-2am), but you get a lot of fights breaking out, and since they've started enforcing the age rule, there are quite a lot of drugs around (girls have a particularly bad time). It's probably not really your scene (being mostly teeny-bop and hip hop), but it's one of the places recommended to visitors and those on a budget. |
