travel on silk road Beijing to Kashgar |
|
|
I'm planning to go to Kashgar from Beijing with my family next year and I was wondering how other travellers had found this trip especially roads, other travel, accomodation and costs. Feedback would be appreciated at this planning stage. |

If you really want to do the silk road from the start, go to xian first. there is a defined route from there. we travelled the last half from lanzhou and it was great.
From Lanzhou roads are only ok. We took mostly trains but got on buses from Jiayuguan to Dunhuang and Kashgar to lake caracol and beyond. The roads were pretty terrible and I would advise train travel where possible.
As for costs for that section, its a very well taken route. As a couple we paid, 100 yuan in Langzhou, 100 in Jaiyuguan, 80 in Dunhuang, 100 in Turpan (no good accomodation unless you wanna pay big there), 100 in Urumqi and 100 in Kashgar. We could have paid less if we weren't slumming it.
Dunhuang has tons of accomodation as does Urumqi and Kashgar. Turpan is very thin on the ground and Jiayuguan isn't great. |
