There are many hikes around HongKong. Bus from Central to Wong Ngai Chung gap - get off at petrol station just before crest. Go up path beside petrol station and walk up main road to country park entrance.Follow Wilson Trail (from memory) to Jardine's Gap/Mount Butler - fantastic views over the harbour. Carry on and make a left eventually leading down to Quarry Bay/Kornhill. Tram/bus/mtr back to Central.
This walk gives you great views both over the harbour and the reservoirs at the back of the island - it's a bit strenuous at the beginning.
(5 hour jobby) - get to Po Lin Monastery on Lantau - have lunch there in the monastery - good veggie feed. Head off past the toilets/teahouse diagonally opposite the bus stops and make a right at the big wooden gate/flat grassy area down a path. This takes you down one side of Shek Pik reservoir or you can branch off to the right further down the path and go the other side.
At the bottom cross the top of the dam on the road and then up over Keung Shan and down into Tai O - you can bus back from here.
This one is strenuous but rewarding - good views out over the sea, leafy paths, mountain walking and a great old Chinese style house in the woods on the way down to Tai O.
For both of these you would really need the maps as mentioned above, and a compass (get cheapies for HK$10 in Temple Street night market).
Another place to get the maps is in Admiralty at the Government Publications Office - it's in the same block as Pacific Place facing the street, I think at ground level (but might be on the 1st floor). |
