Beijing. The Beijing International Youth Hostel, , has apparently been closed for 2 years now. There should be touts there, though, to take you elsewhere. The Lusongyuan Binguan was completely booked for the weekend when I got there. Try booking ahead. I stayed at the Feiying International Youth Hostel, which isn't in LP. It's near the Changchunjie stop on the Loop Line of the subway. It was one of the best I stayed in -- clean and cheap (35RMB/bed?) with very helpful, English-speaking management.
Chengdu. Dragon Town Youth Hostel, it is pretty good. The location's not as good as some others, but it's nice enough, cheap and has English-speaking staff.
Tangkou. In this town at the base of Huangshan in Anhui (which is definitely worth a visit!), the dorms at the Xiaoyao Binguan are allegedly closed. (I'm not entirely sure about this -- I may have been scammed.)
Hangzhou. I splurged on a very nice room near the West Lake (don't remember the name of the hotel) for 150RMB/night. Steal the toothbrushes and comb and comfort yourself with the thought of how much those would cost you at home.
Shanghai. I stayed at the Captain Hostel. It's on Fuzhou Street, half a block west of the Bund, around the corner from the Pudong Development Bank. At 55RMB/bed, it wasn't the cheapest, but it's new, clean, nice and in a great location. I hear that the Pujiang Hotel, is still around and good, too. |
